Alyssum Seed Packet Giveaway!

Alyssum is one of my very favourite Guerrilla Garden plants to grow from seed, so for “National Give Something Away Day” I have decided to fill the FREE SEED MAILBOX with some Alyssum seed packets.

Alyssum is an easy to grow annual that not only smells amazing but requires very little maintenance and easily re-seeds itself. When the blooms are spent just give the plant a little haircut with some scissors to keep it tidy. The trim job will encourage the Alyssum to bloom again and if you place the dried ends in a paper bag to dry out you will have some seeds for other guerrilla garden purposes…if you know what I mean.

Additionally, Alyssum is known to attract pollinators and other beneficial insects, and when sprinkled around the base of tomato and pepper plants it will actually act as a living mulch. The draping mounds of tiny flowers are perfect for dressing up your vegetable containers and if you happen to live in the Pacific North West, it can even be direct sowed in the fall for earlier blooms.
FYI- Alyssum planted in containers with lettuce and pansies makes for a really nice spring planter combination.

Urban Guerrilla Gardeners especially love alyssum because it can be grown in cracks in sidewalks or paving stones and once established it is extremely heat and drought tolerant. Plus, if you really must do your gardening undercover due to certain Anti Garden Strata Laws then you can easily sprinkle the seeds and inconspicuously scuff them into the dirt with your shoe when nobody is looking. Then take a daily walk with your water bottle and water the seeds on the sly until the alyssum is established. When it comes to Unauthorised Strata Plantings, it can also be helpful to give the landscapers weather appropriate beverages on occasion so they will look the other way…or so I have heard.
Fact: Alyssum comes in many shades of white, pink, and purple and will even grow when sprinkled into the lava rock mulch that Some-Strata-Complexes may have installed along the walkways.

To me the absolutely best thing about Alyssum is the fragrance. Smells have a stronger link to memory and emotion than any of the other senses and on a hot summer day Alyssum smells like warm sweet honey. How lovely is that!

These are all the reasons that Alyssum is one of my very favourite Guerrilla Garden plants and I hope it ends up being one of yours as well.
